VLAN and wireless LAN (WLAN) Besides traditional cabling, radio or infrared signals can be utilised to gain network communication over a minimum distance. This can be referred to as a Wireless local area network connection. Bradley Mitchell goes to mention that ‘A WLAN casually extends an already existing wired LAN. These WLANS are built by connecting a device named the AP (Access Point) to the edge of the wired active network’. Configuring such a connection is made possible because a wireless network adaptor is installed too. Whenever there’s network communication involved an area of concern for both wired and cordless is security. Because the two types of connections are not the same, similar principles or standards of security cannot be applied to the two. When dealing with wireless LANs the (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is a built in security measure which encrypts information in an attempt to make sure it’s only viewable to only who is authorised to see it. Another security measure includes choosing between (Wi-Fi Protected Access) WPA and (Wi-Fi Protected Access II)
