It has been around for decades from the mere idea to actual development, yet only in the last few years has virtual reality been making it’s way back into the spotlight. This technology has been used for years in the military and in governmental projects as well as in the fields of science and medicine. The idea of visiting distant places around the world, to participate in exciting activities which are normally out of reach, or even explore outer space like the astronauts, all from the comforts of our living room or classroom. Imagine walking along the beach on some remote island; experience the adrenaline rush of skydiving or getting behind the wheel of a Ferrari Testarossa. There are different applications that range from entertainment and medical studies, military practices to scientific research, and a newer, more advanced virtual educational platform. Virtual reality has allowed for advancement and growth in our world and continues to amaze us as we look ahead into the rapidly evolving technological future. But what exactly is virtual reality? Who are the masterminds that so brilliantly gave us the idea of virtual reality? How have we been using this amazing technology and why are educators so excited about this tech more so today than in the past? Technology has always had its criticisms in the beginning stages and many traditionalists are still opposed to using most modern technologies in the classroom. Some are simply afraid to use it for lack of understanding, and others just do not see that this generation is more in need of constant stimulation in order to stay engaged in learning. The biggest challenge for both educators and learners may perhaps be that our technological advancement has really shaped and is continuing to shape how the next generations learn and process information. Traditional classrooms could be phasing out in the near future, being replaced by more interactive and stimulating augmented classrooms. It is certain that whether virtual learning environments are the new classrooms or if VR only impacts gamers and entertainment enthusiasts, we are faced with the fact that technology plays a major role in classrooms today and as teachers we must advance ourselves by learning how to use these technologies in order to effectively impact students of today.
