Second Language Teaching Experience in a Teacher Training Institute Despite being the largest state in Malaysia, Sarawak has the lowest population density in the country, which stands at 20 people per km only. As of the 2014 census, the state's population was of nearly 3 million, making it the fourth most populous state in Malaysia. Sarawak has more than forty sub-ethnic groups, each with its own distinct language, culture and lifestyle. Cities and larger towns such as Kuching, Miri and Sibu are populated predominantly by Malays, Melanaus, Chinese and a smaller percentage of Ibans and Bidayuhs. Generally, Sarawak has six major ethnic groups: Iban, Chinese, Malay, Bidayuh, Melanau and Orang Ulu. Several minor ethnic groups include Javanese (mostly residing in Kuching) and Kedayan (usually found in northern region). There are four teacher training institutes in Sarawak. I was teaching at one of the institutes, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Sarawak, Miri which is situated in the northern region for more than seven years. At the institute, we celebrated many different festivals such as 'Gulung Bidai' which is the closing ceremony of 'Sambutan Hari Gawai'', 'Rumah Terbuka Aidilfitri' and 'Pesta Tanglung'. It is consider even a normality for non-muslim students to help their muslim friends preparing for 'buka puasa' at the surau's kitchen every day and eat together. There is a real sense of understanding between students, lecturers and staffs there.
