Personal Listening Style Profile

Option #2 Personal Profile Paper How important is listening? In the workplace it is of critical importance. In fact, the US Department of Labor in 1991 issued a report called The Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills which identified skills which are considered indispensable in the workplace (Driesbach, 1993). Active listening was one of just three skills identified in the report. In an effort to improve my personal listening skills, I completed a Personal Listening Style Profile (Addendum). My score for the listening styles are as follows: people-oriented listening 12; action-oriented listening 8; time-oriented listening 6 and content-oriented listening 5. This type of listener desires to hear the point quickly and prefer communication which is organized and concise (Hemby, 2015). In order for me to focus on the point being made I must minimize distractions. One of my strengths is how I try to minimize the noise impediment to listening. It is very difficult to grasp a quickly stated point if you are distracted by outside noise. Another strength is how I value the approach of using aids to recall information. Aids can be in the form of repletion of information or even using a mnemonic device to increase retention (Neuliep, 2015). For this listening style it is all about time and individuals who prefer this style will desire time guidelines at meetings, tell individuals the amount of time available for their message and will be annoyed when they sense time is being wasted (Hemby, 2015). I do not possess many characteristics of this listening style according to the survey. This is due to my belief that all communication is of value. This is a strength because I do not attempt to monopolizing a conversation by trying to divert attention to me instead of the speaker if I told the speaker that my schedule only allowed a certain amount of time for their conversation. In essence I would be saying I and by extension my time is more important than you and what you are communicating. Content-Oriented Listening Style My lowest score was in Content-Oriented Listening Style. This style prefers technical communication which is challenging to the intellect and allows them to examine all aspects of an issue (Hemby, 2015). This listening style is a challenge for me and I need to implement solutions to the obstacles this style presents for me. To avoid message overload I will be careful OPTION #2 PERSONAL PROFILE PAPER
