The American Dream is still circling around our country according to the article, “From poverty to a $3 billion fortune — the incredible rags-to-riches story of Oprah Winfrey” written by Kathleen Elkins. This article opens the eyes of many Americans when showing the traumatic childhood of the famous Oprah Winfrey. When she was a little girl she was shuffled between many family members. By the young age of only nine years old, poor Winfrey was raped for the first time. When she was 14 she moved in with her dad in Nashville, Tennessee, where her success then began to take off. After doing very well in high school and college, she finally decided to start a career in media. Oprah became the first black news anchor before the age of 20, but unfortunately this is where she got sexually harassed and humiliated at her job. Seven and a half…show more content…
Throughout her teenage years, she immediately realized she had a passion for media. She joined the speech team in high school and got a job working at a local black radio station after school. Oprah also earned her place on honor roll and was voted most popular girl in school by her peers. Winfrey then got a full ride scholarship to Tennessee State University based on her outstanding communication skills in 1973. While there, she received her degree in Speech Communications and Performing Arts. Right after graduating she started her first career, but was only there seven and a half months before she was fired. This hardworking woman didn’t give up. Right after that unfortunate incident, she got a gig on, “AM Chicago.” “Winfrey turned "AM Chicago" from the lowest-rated talk show in Chicago to the highest-rated one,” (Academy of Achievement). Three years later the show was turned into, “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” This woman gave herself a chance at life. She had an extremely determined work ethic, that payed off for her in the end.
