Oprah Winfrey is an amazing woman, human, and entrepreneur; she has lead the way for millions of women around the world. It is said that she is the most influential woman of the 20th century. She had a tough childhood, but grew up to be the only black billionaire in northern america today. Oprah styles the latest trends, and to many americans her word is law. People notice what is on Oprah’s Favorite Things. Oprah started her life in poverty in rural mississippi. She was born to an unwed teenage mother, and spent the first six years of her life being raised by her maternal grandmother. She has said that her mother was considerably less supportive than her grandmother had been, largely because of the long hours she worked as a maid. Winfrey’s mother gave birth to her half-sister, Patricia, when Oprah was seven, and in 1962 Oprah was sent to live in Nashville, Tennessee with her father, Vernon Winfrey. While she was living with her father, her mother gave birth to a third daughter who was put up for adoption. She also had a son later on, Jeffrey, who died of AIDS related causes in 1989. Oprah is one of the worlds most prominent philanthropists, running in caliber with Bill and Melinda Gates. She is currently actively giving to 24 causes and 21 charities, all through the Oprah Winfrey Foundation; a foundation run exclusively by her. It does not take donations, and instead invests its money to get capital return, which it in turn donates. Oprah started her career in the radio business while still in high school, and started co-anchoring the local news at age nineteen. She was great at television and her delivery of lines was phenomenal, which eventually got her transferred to day-time talk-shows.
