In The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, many slides show how the regime had changed people. Satrapi wanted to show that even though people may seem modern, the regime had ultimately changed their perspective on almost anything. She shows this on pages 75 when her mother pointed out how some neighbors had changed. She also shows this on page 270 when her friends thought she had had sex with one man, not many. Satrapi shows that the regime had reprogrammed people to be against modern thinking.
On page 75, neighbors walk by in full coverings and Satrapi’s mother says that the woman has gone from wearing a miniskirt to a chador and the man has gone from drinking to praying, only in a year’s time. She is comparing people’s old selves and views to their new selves and views. Satrapi wants to show how quickly people had changed and how fast the regime’s hold was spreading. The difference between before and during the revolution was great. People were modern before the revolution but had changed to traditionalist during the revolution. It was wrong for the regime to hold everyone to such high standards. Too many people were executed for having traditionalist views. They were excited to hear until they learned it was with multiple men, then they started calling Satrapi a whore. This shows that even though people might have looked or acted modern, the regime had still made them traditionalists. The women wanted to look like rebels against the regime by thinking sex before marriage was okay. The women looked like they were siding with the regime when they started shaming Satrapi for having sex with a few men. It shows how appearances can be deceiving and how the regime had brainwashed people, potentially without them understanding that their views had
