Humeral shaft fractures (HSF) account for approximately 3-5% of all fractures. They can be managed effectively by both non-operative and operative techniques. Both treatment modalities have pros and cons. Favorable outcome has been observed over the last few decades with managing humeral shaft fractures with non-operative reduction methods which includes hanging cast, functional brace, Velpeau dressing, co-aptation splint and abduction cast. Favorable outcomes in these fractures are due to better tolerance of malunion in humerus. Major drawback of non-operative treatment is that it requires a long period of immobilization, which carries a risk of prolonged shoulder joint stiffness and inconvenience for the patient.
