An Athenian is someone who acquires knowledge, reasoning, grace, values tradition and culture, and also has an interest in public affairs. In today’s day and age an Athenian is similar to what was we call philanthropist in our society. They acquire many common philanthropic ways by aiming to help others in need. Oprah resembles a modern Athenian because “to be an Athenian is to take interest in public affairs and the improvement of public behaviour” (oprah.com). Winfrey uses her earnings and success to encourage people in the community to help others and give to those who are less fortunate, whether its donations, or volunteering their time. Through the years Oprah has received many viewers that respect her, that one episode she inspired her viewers to make a difference in the lives of others. Sooner than later, led to the making of the Oprah Angel Network. The Angel Network is a public charity made to encourage our society in helping people all over the world, and making a difference. This Network also supports charitable projects globally. One of many projects was helping Free the Children. In 1999, Oprah helped Craig Kielburger founder of Free the Children in building hundreds of schools providing over 30,00 children worldwide. Oprah has a strong passion and will in helping children in need locally and globally. Winfrey not only wants to engage children in but protect those who can’t protect themselves. By that being said, she instituted the National Child Protection Act, which is “a national database of convicted child abusers” (oprah.com).
