Mackenzie Tant Coach Pavatte World History 2 December 2015 Roman Architecture How has the architecture of Rome influenced the modern world? Rome influenced the modern world by achieving four major things: aqueducts, concrete, domes, and arches. Although most people may not know it, Rome has a major influence on the modern world. Without Rome, the modern world would not be the same as it is today. One of Rome's greatest achievements, was the construction of aqueducts. As Rome grew, they needed a more efficient way to transport water. Aqueducts are stone structures that carry water from a spring to a city. Aqueducts usually were many miles long so that they could transport water from the springs in the mountains down to the cities. The longest one was nearly forty five miles long. Aqueducts are very efficient, because they use gravity to transport water, but they become useless when water needs to be transported up hill. Concrete was invented in Rome around seventy nine A.D. in Rome, and was the most common building material in Rome. Concrete in Rome was made by mixing lime, sand, small pebbles, and volcanic rock; this mixture was placed in wooden forms, and compressed to make concrete blocks. Over time, the formation of concrete was changed to use cement instead of volcanic rock, so that it would be stronger and hold together longer. Concrete revolutionized the Roman Empire by making the process of building much more efficient. Today, concrete is used in almost every modern building, wether the building is constructed of concrete, held together by concrete, or sitting on a concrete foundation, concrete is evident in almost every modern building.
