John Keats poem, “When I have fears that I may cease to be”, is one that’s meaning is relatable to many people across the globe. When reading the poem one can begin to imagine what their fears would be if they were dying. Keats uses different literary devices to help convey his meaning to the reader. Some devices that he uses are imagery, personification, and simile. Through the use of these literary devices, Keats is able to show the reader what he is trying to communicate instead of just telling them. Literary devices makes it easier for the reader to understand the meaning of the poem, and thus makes it easier to relate to. In line four of the poem Keats uses the literary device known as a simile. He says, Before high piled books, in character, Hold like rich garners the full ripened grain; (Keats, 1848. PG 490). The simile here is where Keats compares writing to grain. In the beginning of his poem Keats is saying that he is afraid that he will die without anyone knowing what he has to say. He doesn’t want to die and have his words locked up in his mind. He wants to share his beliefs and his opinions and his stories with the world.
