BANG, CRASH. Sounds of squealing tires and screaming fills the air, while glass and metal structures explode on all sides of the road; bloody bodies lie on the cold ground surrounded by ambulances, while firefighters rush to clear away the debris. This scene is all too familiar and worst than that it can easily be avoided. “Distracted driving is the act of driving while engaged in other activities that take the driver’s attention away from the road” (WHAT IS Distracted Driving?). You took your eyes off the road for only a second, it was just supposed to be a quick message to your friend or family, but in the blink of an eye your whole life changed. Responding to a text takes away your attention from the road for about five seconds. Going at a speed of 55 miles per hour that gives you enough time to travel the length of a whole football field (Texting and Driving Statistics - Distracted Driving Drives Up Risk). Drivers who text while behind the wheel are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident than those who don't. In a two-car accident, each passenger has less than a 10% chance of dying, these odds severely increase when talking on the phone or texting is added to the situation (The Dangers of Texting While Driving). Texting while driving is like driving with a blindfold on: you’re completely unaware of what is happening on the road. It will only lead to terrible accidents that result in losing the lives of loved ones. It is dangerous to yourself and the lives of other innocent people, as well.
