The popularity of mobile devices has had some unintended and even dangerous consequences. Sending and receiving text messages while operating a motor vehicle subsequently increases the risks associated with distracted driving that unnecessarily endangers lives. In the United States, driver distractions are the leading cause of automobile accidents superseding those caused by drunk drivers. Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. These types of distractions can include eating or drinking, adjusting the radio, putting on makeup, talking to a passenger, using a cell or smartphone, or texting. Texting requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, so it is by far the most alarming and dangerous distraction for drivers. (NHTSA)…show more content…
