Distracted driving is becoming an exponential problem that has put young adults and teens at risk. With the advancement of technology, it is difficult for young teens to keep their eyes off of their smartphones. There are a plethora of distractions it creates from phone calls, text messages, and any notification it makes. It is really difficult for people to put down their phones and not be focused on driving; it becomes a bad habit overtime. Simply put, the cell phone causes many disruptions for teens and young adults while operating a motor vehicle. Essentially, a distracted driver is a dangerous one. To prevent teens from this bad behavior that can put them at harm’s way; inducing safer behaviors while driving would be having strict laws, enforcement, and increased awareness of distracted driving.…show more content…
More so, the states have banned texting while driving and enacted the Graduated Driver’s Licensing (GDL) laws for teen drivers. The Graduated Driver’s Licensing is a program that helps teens to safely gain experience of driving before having a full privilege license. Taking a closer look, the Graduated Driver’s Licensing program is a three stage program that consists of the learner stage, the intermediate stage, and the full privilege stage. First, the learner stage begins no earlier than age of 16 that lasts 6 months with a minimum of 30-50 hours of parent supervised practice. Secondly, the intermediate stage lasts until age of 18 that includes night time driving restrictions at 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM and restriction on only one teen passenger or none. Lastly, the full privilege stage is granting a standard driver’s license.
