Distracted Driving Talking or texting on a non-hands-free device is a growing epidemic in America. Distracted drivers are making America’s roadways dangerous to drive on. In 2013, 3,154 people were killed in distracted driver crashes. Texting while driving makes a person twenty-three times more likely to get in an accident (“AT &T”). If the chances of crashing increase so much just from becoming distracted by your phone, why do so many people text and drive? 93% of teens think texting while driving is dangerous, but 43% of teens do it anyway (“Driving”). Teenagers think it is okay to text and drive in situations such as “the light was red.” Just because the light is red does not decrease the risk of being in an accident. The minimal amount of time that that a person loses sight of the road to check a device is five seconds. Five seconds does not seem like much time, but it is enough to cause a serious accident (“Texting”). Most texting while driving laws are created for teenagers to help them remain focused on the road, but adults do it too. Forty-eight percent of kids have been in a car while the driver was texting (“Driving”). These adults should be more mindful that they are setting a bad example for their children. Drive Mode silences all messages and alerts and auto-replies when driving to let friends and family know you cannot respond. This free application can make the difference to stay focused on the road instead of causing a fatal accident. Drive Mode activates when moving fifteen miles per hour or more. Another interesting feature of this application is the ability to notify parents of young drivers when the app is turned off (“AT & T”).
