Tougher Laws Are Needed to Combat Distracted Driving. Distracted drivers are the cause of many accidents on the roads today because texting is one of the most prevalent distractions to drivers these days. If drivers were concentrating on the surrounding road instead of reading or writing text messages, they would see what was going on and be able to avoid being involved in an accident. There would be fewer accidents, if there were tougher laws to deter and to remove distracted drivers from the road. Many accidents are caused by distracted drivers. Texting takes a person's eyes off the road and refocuses them on a mobile device. Many things can happen during the moment a person's eyes are on his or her phone. The distracted driver misses important signals while texting. Many people start to slow down causing traffic to build up behind them. Accidents can occur when other drivers attempt to pass the slower moving driver. A distracted driver can also cause an accident trying to make a missed turn or exit. While accidents do happen the roads would be safer without distracted drivers. Emergency response teams would be available for other calls. Some drivers say, “Oh I can text without even looking at my phone” that is so wrong because their hands and mind not where they should be. Some drivers say, “Oh I'm not drunk, I'm just texting” that is still wrong because texting and driving makes a driver about 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving intoxicated and it is the same as driving after drinking four beers. Younger, inexperienced drivers often say, “I saw an adult texting and driving so I thought it was okay for me to text and drive” that is wrong because they are nearly twice as likely to ride with someone has been drinking not to mention that the adult they saw was not even being a responsible
