1.0 Background of the Study Motivation is the drive within the people that causes the person to behave a certain way and to have certain behaviour. For example, he or she improves his or her job performance because they want to get promoted to higher position. This means they have the motivation to excel in their job. In the incentive theories, motivation can be differentiate into two different theories which are the intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. The intrinsic motivation is the person self-desire to find new adventure and challenges to obtain knowledge. The factor that will be discussed in this study is compensation. This is because compensation triggers the extrinsic motivation. When the extrinsic motivation is triggers it usually exhibits the intrinsic motivation. Therefore, it was important for this study to find out whether there was a significant relationship between compensation and intrinsic motivation. In this study, salary, promotion, recognition, working conditions and bonus were all the elements of compensation that will be investigated. 1.1 Problem Statement In the world that constantly changes, the needs of reward of the employees also change. If the needs are not fulfill, this can affect their intrinsic motivation which also affect their performance. The human practitioner must be keen about the changes of need of the employees to retain their employee motivation to help the organization to achieve their goals.
