Girls Should Not Play In Boys’ Sports When children or teenagers participate in sports, it teaches teamwork, encourages physical activity and improves mental health. However, all of these benefits could be compromised if girls are allowed to play on a boys’ team, such as football, baseball, or basketball. There have been many arguments and situations contending that girls should not play sports with boys. The reasons why girls should not participate in “boy sports” are the difference in skill level, different motivations and the level of comfort. Mikheala Jenkins has grown up with her brothers, playing football with them year round and she finally asked her school, Liberty Union-Thurston, to play on the football team, but was denied. The reason she was denied was an explanation from the superintendent Paul Mathews saying, “The district offers girls other, non-contact athletic options. We have opportunities for girls, but those opportunities do not include contact sports.” Her school made the right call by denying her the…show more content…
The girls would try their best to match every aspect of their ability level to the boys, but they just wouldn’t have the endurance to keep going as long. Because of this, the coaches would have to have extra patience for the girls, and possibly spend more time working with them to build their strength and endurance. This may hold the coaches back from helping the boys excel, so they may decide not to give the girls the special attention that they might need. Finding a gender neutral way to coach and motivate both boys and girls would be a disadvantage for many coaches. However, if the coaches would recognize the importance of the players’ motivations, it would go a long way in their success. As Vince Lombardi says, “Coaches who can outline plays on a blackboard are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their players and motivate.”
