Paige Harpenau Mrs. Mishler Advanced Comp, Period 2 20 March 2015 Softball in the Olympics Popular olympic sports include badminton, trampoline, ping pong, shooting, rhythmic gymnastics, and even synchronized swimming (Caple). Why not softball? Since the removal of softball from the Olympics, it is barely recognized as a sport (“Should Softball”). Softball was featured in the Summer Olympics from 1996 to 2008, but removed from the programme for 2012 and 2016. I believe it should be brought back, it helps give young girls like myself , hope of a future in the sport they love the most (“Should Softball”). This would provide new insight and role models for girls and example of the impact on their lives through sport, and leave a mark – a core pillar of the Olympic movement – that will change the lives of those yet to come and change the world, like Olympic dreams should (Finch). The Olympics are what young softball players dream of and look forward to growing up. The Olympics are probably the leading showcase for female athletes. With many of these Olympic hopefuls coming straight from college, the IOC has hit a soft spot with the young hopefuls who spent countless hours in batting cages and softball practices preparing to represent their nation (Charette). "I just want to see it back in the Olympics, and I want all the little girls that look up to us to have a chance to play in the Olympics," Lauren Gibson, an All-American at the University of Tennessee and playing for Team USA, said. "All the girls that have stuck around with USA, I feel like that's what they want is just a chance to play in the Olympics and give everybody else a chance. For everybody else who dreams about playing in the Olympics to at least have the ability to have that chance"
