Importance Of Science

Most students have a favorite subject, whether it’s mathematics, history, or music. My favorite subject is science. I discovered my love for science when I was attending John Bowne Elementary School. My science teacher was holding an egg dropping contest in order for students to explore physics concepts: momentum and moment of inertia. Although I wasn’t familiar with these complex terms at the time, I was extremely excited about the contest because I was allowed to have fun, while learning at the same time. Students were given the difficult task to create a cushion with soft materials, such as paper towels, in a shoebox. An egg would then be dropped into the shoebox and if it remained intact, it was a success. After many trials and errors,…show more content…
I chose QHSS over Bayside High School, another high school I got accepted into, because QHSS places an emphasis on the sciences as a college-preparatory curriculum. Not only can this type of learning environment deepen my interest in science, but also prepare me for my academic path after high school. I feel very fortunate that QHSS has strongly encouraged my academic growth. I have taken the required science courses Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Towards the end of sophomore year, I had completed the required number of credits for science. However, I chose to continue my study of science and took AP Physics during my junior year. In addition, I plan to take AP Biology next year as a senior because Biology was my strongest subject out of all my explored areas of science. Engagement in a variety of science courses therefore, has allowed me to narrow down which areas of science I would like to focus on. There are two main fields of science: physical sciences and life sciences. Although I am passionate about science in general, I feel a stronger pull towards life sciences. I have always felt a strong connection towards animals because they are genuine, unlike humans who often hide or fake their emotions. My family members, who are all animal lovers, contributed…show more content…
Through this program, I am given the rare opportunity learn from licensed veterinarians, people I can be associated with not only for the internship, but throughout my career. Such interaction allows me to gain more knowledge of the veterinary industry, thus helping me decide if the occupation meets my expectations and if it is suitable for me. In addition, interacting and assisting the veterinary staff can greatly improve my communication and teamwork skills, two of the most important skills in a work environment. Approximately 85 percent of companies use internships and other educational programs to fill full-time positions. Therefore, by participating in this veterinary internship, I am able to stand out from a large group of people striving for the same career. Aside from expanding my academic and career path, I have the opportunity to grow personally as well. I hope my mentorship with the veterinary staff at the Icahn School of Medicine. establishes a network of professionals and references that I can rely on possibly for the
