Employee job satisfaction is essential to face the dynamic and ever-increasing challenges of maintaining productivity of the organization by keeping their workforce constantly engaged and motivated (Dr. D B Rane, 2011). Job satisfaction is considered as varied and complex concept, which cannot be compacted into one simple definition. Mc.Shane and Glinow defines job satisfaction as a person’s evaluation of their job. It is an appraisal of perceived job characteristics, work environment, and emotional experiences at work. It is the degree to which employees are satisfied depends on the individual and the workplace (2013). A fair and equitable compensation is a major contributing factor to the level of job satisfaction of an employee. Malik, Danish and Munir describes pay is an imperative factor for job satisfaction (2012). While Taylor and West (1992) incited that job satisfaction is affected by the payment levels affect. The level of job satisfaction an employee exhibits has a substantial relationship with the quantity of pay an employee receives. Job satisfaction level is less for employees, who receive less amount of pay whereas higher amount receiving employees have high level of satisfaction (Malik, Danish, and Munir (2012)). Serrano and Vieira (2005) further this theory as they indicated that low pay workers report a lower level of job satisfaction when compared with their higher paid counterparts. Job satisfaction also varies between the private sector and the public sector. Rast and Tourani reported that most public employees will feel less satisfy with their jobs if they compare their salaries to those who work for the private sector (2012). According to an article published by the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian newspaper “Police sickout ‘ no threat to public safety’ ” by Rachael Espinet the Prison Service also had a low turnout, with approximately 60 percent of the prison guards calling in sick. Heery and Noon (2001) denotes job promotion as “the action of shifting an employee up the organization hierarchy which will normally bring to an increase of responsibility and status and a better remuneration package among the individuals who are promoted”. Many researchers give their opinion that job satisfaction is strongly correlated with promotion opportunities and there is a direct and positive association between promotional opportunities and job satisfaction (Malik, Danish, Munir (2012). Kosteas postulates that firms can use promotions as a reward for highly productive workers, creating an incentive for workers to exert greater effort (2006).
