Discrimination in the workplace takes place when there is separating of individual(s) from the rest of other individuals. Discrimination - defined as distinguishing differences between things or treating someone as inferior based on their race, sex, national origin, age or other characteristics (eeoc.gov, 2018). The U.S. Supreme Court declared that all the laws protecting employees from discrimination to be unconstitutional and that employers could adopt their owner policies prohibiting discrimination the work place (eeoc.gov, 2018). When employed by a state government, employees are protected by law and cannot file suit against the government for monetary damages (------). This discrimination against Americans with disabilities has the biggest issue within the private business sector. Some benefits include more diversity, productivity, matching the right talent with the right job, and promotions based on proven work performance. Costs associated with this would be cost of turnover and staff replacement, increase in worker’s compensation claims and employee health issues, compensation issues, and legal costs. There are benefits and costs associated with voluntarily adopting hiring and promotion practices that have been developed to diversify workforce, some of those are: Increased productivity: Diversity brings varying new perspectives to an organization along with productivity and competitive advantages. By having diversity organizations can grow with enthusiasm along with the desire to work more passionately and results in better employee morale. Diversity brings the opportunities for new ways of doing things and provides an opportunity for growth. New Creative Thinking: Diversity helps bring new ways of thinking to an organization. This brings change to an organization along with better mentoring and training programs to help grow employees. Organizations who encourage diversity tend to have strong leaders and attract even more diverse talent in their workforce leading to better return on investments and financial strength.
