Climate change has an impact on every person and every living thing on the planet. We cannot continue at this rate. Not only are we likely to deplete all our petroleum resources soon, climate change will continue to worsen until we change our ways. According to experts, the yield of nearly every crop from the California fertile central valley will drop by 30% over the next few decades. Changes in the growing season will cause corn, wheat, rice, and cotton to become significantly harder to come by. In addition, the changes in temperature can have disastrous effects upon bee populations. Without the bees available to pollinate the food we eat, our current production will dwindle. As a result of fewer moving parts, and a more direct powertrain, electric engines are much more efficient at converting stored chemical energy into movement than internal combustion engines. Industry has made great strides in past years to make combustion engines more and more efficient, but they are up against fundamental limits, says Bill Destler, the president of Rochester Institute of Technology. Better efficiency means more savings. Considering the same quantity of stored energy, whether it be electricity from a coal power plant, or from hydrocarbon bonds within gasoline, an electric vehicle will travel further. Electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt can travel 40 miles on 11 Kilowatt-hours (KWH) of charge, or the equivalent to one-third of a gallon of gasoline. Cost-wise, that equates to nearly 120 miles per gallon with the national average cost per KWH is $0.11 (Destler). The government already supports transitioning to electric vehicles, several states offer tax credits of up to $2,500 in addition to the $7,500 that the federal government offers.
