El Salvador is a small country on the southern part of the Central American isthmus. The small country got its independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. After the country became independent, it had a 12 year civil war that ended in 1992, costing 75,000 lives. El Salvador is a well-known, important country in Central America, and like any other country, the important parts of it is its government structure, its economic condition, and its population. First of all, El Salvador has a republic government, where individuals are represented through the government. The legislative branch makes laws, the executive branch passes laws and sends yearly reports to the executive branch, and the judicial branch sees if the laws being passed is constitutional. El Salvador has a unicameral legislative branch that has 84 seats and each term is three years long, and each person can be elected an unlimited amount of times. The executive branch is made up of three different parts, the chief of state, the head of government, and the Council of Ministers. The head of state is only one person, called the president, who is also in the head of government. The president can serve a five-year term only once, and can only be elected if they are Salvadorian by birth, are over 30 years old, and are part of a legally recognized party. The head of government is both the president and the vice president. The third and final part of the executive branch is the Council of Ministers, which is a group of people who are selected by the president. The judicial branch is made up of the Supreme Court and the Chambers of Second Instance.
