The film Standing in the Shadows of Motown was an insightful documentary into the beginnings of the musical style that is Motown. Before watching the documentary I had no idea that Motown was attributed to helping with racial integration by popularizing African-American artists to many audiences. The film also helped me learn that Detroit was the birthplace of the Motown sound. Motown music became so popular because, of it’s iconic sound. The Motown sound was known as an “uptown soul style’’ (Brackett 173). Berry Gordy was the creator of the Motown sound because he wanted to create a record label that successfully incorporated African-American music into the mainstream industry.
