Discrimination is unfair treatment against someone, it can be based on a variety of characteristics: age, sex, height, weight, clothing, income, education, marital status, sexual orientation, disease, disability, religion and politics (Henslin, Possamai & Possami-Ineseday 2014, p. 265). A variety of people from across Australia experience discrimination. The following two paragraphs focus on two large discrimination factors in Australian society right now and how they affect Australian image; same sex marriage and racism. Majority of Australians support same sex couples and marriage equality however it is not legal in Australia for same sex couples to marry. This law is understandably a cause of anger for many members of the Australian society. Racial discrimination is experienced largely by Indigenous Australians. In 2006/2007 face to face interviews were conducted involving 153 Aboriginal people living in Adelaide. The results showed that racism was regularly experienced by 93% of participants and almost two thirds of people felt that racism affected their health (Baum, Bentley, Gallaher & Ziersch 2011). Australia as a whole is made up of many different cultures and a variety of different people from around the world. From the outside in, it is significant that Australia is a multicultural country. However it’s how Australia approaches and integrates with their multicultural society that is most important. Racial discrimination has a significant impact on Australia’s image. Australia once had a strong sense of itself as a ‘white’ nation (Henslin, Possamai & Possami-Ineseday 2014, p. 262). This is not the case
