Colin O’Leary Research Paper The American Civil war, one of the bloodiest wars of any other American war, about 620,000 soldiers died and many injured (“Civil War Trusts”). If the nation would have stopped this war from happening and agreed on the same thing the U.S. could have saved that many soldiers from dying and letting then see their families again. The Civil War creates many questions and movements such as slavery, advantages, and how it affects people. First off, there was a big commotion going on that slavery was the main cause of the American Civil War. An advantage was that they had almost an equal army as the Union, considering them having 29 million less people than the Union. They do not have one rifle works place in the entire south, confederates have one-ninth industrial capacity than the Union (ushistory.org). When the confederates did not have enough bullets they would melt down bells from churches to make ammunition (“Strengths and Weaknesses”). One advantage was that they had trained officers fighting. Seven of the eight military colleges in the U.S. were in the south (ushistory.org). Since the confederates were playing on defense they knew every mile of their territory, as the union did not (ushistory.org). A big problem in the south was that there was no food to go around. Some of the acts that were passed are the Homestead Act, pacific railway act, morill land grants act, and national banking act (“The American Civil War”). Also federal income tax, uniform currency, and daily mail delivery to home have been enforced (“ACWC”). The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed. This granted freedom, citizenship, and equal protection of the law to all born in the United States, and declared the right to vote could not be denied by race or color (“The American Civil War Center”). New symbol evidence from the war in present time, including St. Andrews cross on a read field that evokes heritage, pride, hate, or racism depending on view (“The Civil War”). Some of the health care that improved is field-tested doctors, well versed in anatomy, and surgical practice (AARP). The nation adapted to the war aid and made an American Red Cross. Thus, Americans prize America as the land of opportunity. The war also paved the way Americans live, learn, and move about. We developed the first transcontinental railroad, homestead in west, and land grant college system (AARP). The War created Memorial Day to celebrate and thank all the soldiers who fought hard in the wars (AARP).
