Do students have a good work ethic? The simple four letter word work can take on a completely different meaning to two different people from opposite generations. You might ask yourself what exactly does a having a strong work ethic mean. The dictionary defines work ethic as a belief in the moral benefit and importance of works and its inherent ability to strengthen character (Dictionary). Having a strong work ethic is working hard, diligently, and to the best of your ability. You are always constantly trying to achieve goals. You are always willing to go above and beyond to finish something the right way. Students today expect everything to be handed down to them. Setting goals for the future can help you focus on working hard and reaching that goal. It is like a guide in life that can help keep you going on the right path. Some students have goals but they are not practical nor lead to the path of success. Students should set goals like making all As for a semester. That can encourage them to work hard in school and meet that goal. Many students are often scared of what their peers will think of them if they set goals to succeed. Leonardo Bursztyn did a study of 11th graders to see how peer pressure tied into students wanting to work hard. They offered four low income schools in the LA area free SAT prep courses. “Bursztyn says that when students were sitting in the honors classes, among peers who were more high-performing, they were more likely to sign up for the SAT prep course. But when they were sitting in the non-honors classes, among lower-performing peers, something else happened” (Vedantam). It is so normal for students to be lazy and not determined. Giving up on things comes too easy. If something does not go their way they think that it is okay just to get up and walk away. That should not be the case; they should try again until they get it right. When work gets too hard for students they would rather take a failing grade than work harder for a passing grade. “Almost 41 percent of students who start college won’t finish, according to the U.S. Department of Education” (Otani).
