Why Students Should Start Later In School

Delay School In the Morning to Help Students Today's students have more on their plate than ever before. It is not uncommon to have multiple classes, homework, sports practices, extracurricular activities, and even a job. Then there is the pressure of performing well enough to get accepted to a respected university. All of these tasks constantly vie for attention. Because of this, it can be hard to get up early for school in the morning. School districts should move start times to later in the morning to allow students to wake up later. One reason schools should start later is that it benefits the school district and teachers as well. A later start time enables teachers to have extra planning time. In January of 2012, a high school in Idaho pushed back their start time and that allowed teachers to look over and analyze what they would teach that day (“Success”). An organized class period means students can effectively use their time to learn and work. Starting later also has an advantage for the school district. It is no secret that humans need sleep to function properly. The National Sleep Foundation says that high schoolers need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night. A poll found that 87 percent of high school students do not get that much sleep (Shute). Without enough sleep, students will not perform well enough to reach their full potential. Sleep is also essential for good health and well being. Mary Carskadon, a professor at Brown University, states that there are many advantages for teens that get enough sleep. They earn better grades, are less likely to feel depressed, and are more likely to not be absent from school (“School”). Sleep allows the brain to recharge and the body to grow and recuperate.
