According to Dictionary.com a round character is a character in fiction whose personality, background, motives and other features are fully delineated by the author. This is someone who is present throughout the whole fiction and we know enough about them to know how they act and feel. Also according to dictionary.com a flat character is an easily recognized character type in fiction who may not be fully delineated but is usefull in carrying out some narrative purpose of the author. In the movie American Beauty directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball has many different characters who face different challenges throughout the movie but one character in particular that I believe to be the most developed is Angela. The first time we see Angela she is performing as a cheerleader at a basketball game where Carolyn and Lester are there to watch Jane. Halfway through the performance Lester start to fantasize about Angela. In Lester’s fantasy, Angela is dancing for him provocatively, so automatically we start seeing her as being desirable and we think she might want Lester too, even though the dancing never really happened. She is interested in modeling and ends up working with a photographer, whom she claims to have had sex with. Angela is obsessed with being beautiful. She comes across as outgoing and confident saying things like "I don't think that there is anything worse than being ordinary," but she herself feels ordinary. Everyone she has an interaction with she talks about being beautiful or how they have insecurities but she never addresses the fact that they are actually her insecurities. She throws around small hints so often saying complete strangers want her and yelling at Jane "At least I'm not Ugly!" It starts to become obvious that she doesn't believe what she saying and when Ricky calls her ordinary it clearly hits her
