Urbana Reflection

On October 26, 2015, I attended the Chili Cook Off and Hoopla Parade in downtown Urbana, Ohio. This year’s Chili Cook Off and Hoopla Parade brought people of all ages from all over the Champaign County community together for a fun and festive celebration. This year marked Urbana’s sixth annual Chili Cook Off and Hoopla Parade throughout Urbana’s Monument Square. This event featured the Antioch Shriners and countless other organizations, clubs, and groups from around the area. Starting at noon, guests were invited to stop by and taste the chili that many people had prepared for the event after purchasing beads. One particular program that stood out to me at the event was the 4H and FFA groups. There were dozens of people on horseback riding with their FFA or 4H group attire on. Although most Urbana University students, including myself, might be too old to show at local county fairs, they could still have the opportunity to volunteer and help other members. At UU, we have the opportunity to join a 4H club to help with other surrounding organizations, but without attending this event, I would have never learned just how many clubs are active in the community. This is just one of the many organizations that participated in the Hoopla Parade festivities, and I know that there were many others there participating in the festivities such as the ladies red hat club, local pet shelters, and individuals from retirement homes. The 4H and FFA organizations are just one example of the many organizations that were present at the Chili Cook Off and Hoopla Parade, but that was something that I learned was available around the area. Without attending a community event such as the Chili Cook Off and Hoopla Parade, I might not have learned about surrounding businesses, organizations, and music…show more content…
Although many students only attend Urbana University for four years, I believe this event could open the eyes of many students. Many of the faces in the crowds are the ones who regularly attend our Blue Knight sporting events and other campus events such as plays, dramas, shows, and lectures. These people from the community are constantly supporting us whether we know it or not. If this event could reach out to more Urbana University students, they might have their eyes opened to a community that they might not have been exposed to and its wonderful people until they attended a community event such as the Chili Cook Off and Hoopla
