The story “The Star”, by Arthur C. Clark, narrates the events of a voyage taken by a Jesuit astrophysicist and his crew. They embark on a journey to study the remains of the Phoenix nebula. In order to reach this faraway place, they must undergo an interstellar quest. As they reach their destination, the crew discovers the remains of an extinct civilization. Their extinction began with an event caused by the formation of a supernova, which gave birth to what was known as the Phoenix nebula. The civilization left behind a sort of capsule containing important artifacts which represented their culture. They hoped that someone, in the future, might stumble upon it. In this capsule, they collected art, music, and literature, as well as a description of how to interpret what the capsule contained. The story, since it was told by a Jesuit, contained a certain aspect of contradicting ideologies. It presented the opposition of religious beliefs against scientific studies. This story tells about how a star entered our solar system in an inexplicable astronomical anomaly. The narrative establishes how the star had a trajectory that may have impacted the Earth, or may have come in close proximity to it. It continues to narrate how the star’s proximity to the Earth’s surface caused a series of ecological events.
