While each approach theory has a definitive aspect for leaders facilitating followers needs to achieve their goals, the path-goal theory uses another facet that leaders must consider for followers to be satisfied with the leader, group and organization and that is, “how will leaders motivate followers to accomplish designated goals” (115). The path-goal theory focuses on whatever style of leadership that is chosen by the leader, in addition, no matter what level the follower is on and what business the organization represents, the leader is responsible for choosing a behavior that best fits the needs of the follower within the atmosphere in which they work. With this in mind, a directive leadership is exactly what it sounds like. The leader givers their follower’s direction or instructions about what their daily task may include to point of even informing them of what the expectations are, how the goal should be achieved and expected time frame for the completion of the task is. More so, the directive leader has set a standard and matrix of performance for each follower to reach during the task (117). This type of leader behavior might be good for people who are in need of strict discipline to complete a task. The supportive leadership is similar in style to the consideration behavior from the behavior approach leadership model mentioned prior. Furthermore, the traits of a supportive leader would most likely appeal to a follower who would respond well to a servant leader style, whose goal is to work for the betterment of other. Similarly, the supportive leaders is sociable and welcoming, respects their followers and approaches them peers instead of being subordinates. Another component of the path-goal theory is being a participative leader. A leader will be challenged by the array of diversity with a workplace, including “needs, attitudes, beliefs and values that diverse people bring to an organization” (Jones, 2018, p133) and will need to know how to respond to the various scenarios that may take place. Not only is treating minorities differently from other groups illegal, it can have a negative impact on the organizations. Therefore, it is especially important for leaders to have a good handle on managing diversity effectively. More so, diversity in the workplace brings in different perspectives, ideas and is a considerable resource that can keep an organization on the competitive edge (134).
