Nina Kayfes Period Six Persuasive Speech Outline Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to persuade my audience to believe that adolescent employment is more harmful than beneficial. Introduction: I have had my fair share of “sick” days throughout my high school career and I think it’s safe to say that over half of them were due to prior late night shifts at work and not completing my homework on time because of them. I also think it’s safe to say that I am not the only one who does this. I’m betting that most of you have had long or late shifts that cause you to be too exhausted to even think about school or anything other than sleep. Body I. Alcohol and Drug Abuse occur much more often with teenagers who work than those who do not. A. Urvia McDowell, Graduate Student, and Ted G. Futris, Ph.D. from Ohio State University determined that students who work are more likely to be involved in substance abuse and even more so students who work 20 or more hours a week. B.Workers are more likely to smoke, use marijuana, and engage in other deviant behaviors. If keeping youth busy helps reduce delinquency, activities besides employment may better serve this goal. Signpost: Not only does working increase one’s chances of partaking in deviant behavior it also can roll over into a student’s school life. II. Distraction from education is one of the biggest arguments on why adolescent employment is unnecessary. A. Hotz and associates concludes that the “detrimental educational consequences of early employment are substantial and even by the age of twenty-five outweigh any beneficial returns for work
