My personal philosophy of nursing revolves around caring. For me, it is the benchmark of high quality, patient-centered, holistic nursing care. I believe that to provide high-quality care to those in need, we must first make an effort to purposefully include the art of caring (Jasmine, 2009). This does not negate the importance of including medical and nursing scientific knowledge in the care provide. Schrock (1981) stated that, “philosophy is an attitude toward life and reality that evolves from each nurses beliefs.” The simplicity of this definition provides me latitude to define my personal nursing philosophy using my own set of beliefs. It is according to Denehy (2001), a continual “work in progress.” This analysis of my philosophy extends beyond the basic realm of technical nursing procedures and alludes to the concept idea of becoming a clinical expert qualified to analyze and treat complex health problems in individuals, groups, communities and populations (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy & O’Grady, 2014). One of the deciding factors in my returning to graduate school was a sense of limited influence in bringing about change to better serve the community surrounding the hospital I work at. I want to expand the accessibility of a more centralized, higher quality care for the vulnerable population in the community, to do so, I want to aid in the creation of a hospital based walk in clinic affiliated to the Emergency department (ED), where the triage nurse can redirect non emergent cases. A mandate of this clinic would be to provide a community-based follow-up for this patient population, therefore alleviate the strain on one of the busiest ED in the province. As an APN, my educational preparation will broaden my scope of practice, influential capacity and provide me with the necessary tools to enhance the access to essential services for this vulnerable patient population. Also, I am in the final schooling stages of my certificate as a primary health care nurse practitioner, an APN role relatively new the and unknown to Quebec.
