National Honors Society Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and have lived well.” Not only does this quote send a great message about how we should live our lives every day, but it also embodies what it means to be a part of the National Honors Society. To be a part of the National Honors Society is a great achievement. This achievement means you have accomplished great performance levels in the four categories character, leadership, service, and scholarship during your high school years. I take my school work seriously because I know I can get good grades as long as I work hard and study. Next, I take great pride in the category of service. Growing up in the Catholic school system I have always done community service. It has become a part of me, some people make it seem like it is such a hassle to help others, but I love helping others and making their lives easier. Like Isabel Andelle said, “We only have what we give.” For example, during Hurricane Sandy I went to the Shop Rite in Hazlet and helped them organize clothing and food for people who lost their homes during Sandy. It was a very humbling experience and it was also nice to see how our community became stronger and closer together through the storm. The next category, character, is what I believe I accomplish the most in. I am who I am because of my parents and the way they have raised me. I am truly blessed to have parents that raised me the way they did. Through them I have learned so much about how to treat others, especially myself. I believe a great display of my character was shown during freshman year. I cheered in the fall and then played basketball in the winter. Basketball season was over but the cheer team still had states, someone on the cheer team got injured and
