The cultures and time periods of King Herot and King Arthur are very different; however, they shared a few things in common. Both time periods had Kings, Queens, and warriors. While the times of King Arthur could be considered more civilized by some, it is debatable that King Herot’s time possessed some of the same values but only carried them out a different way. The approach to battle possessed some differences as well as the architecture and the sociology behind the architecture; however, the values of these time periods were similar. While there was a strategy in place, Beowulf was more ready to rip off an opponent’s arm than to trick his opponent with mind games. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, however, the course of battle would involve mind tricks. Whether magic was involved or just trickery in general, it seems that the people of King Arthur’s time relied on their wit more so than strength like in Beowulf. Another difference in the two time periods and cultures pertains to architecture. The mead hall in Beowulf would have had a large rectangular table in the center where all the warriors and the King and Queen would dine. The King would be located at the head of the table with the Queen at the foot, and the warriors would fill in the spaces between. At first, Grendel’s Mother appears to be barbaric when compared to Queen Guinevere; however, Grendel’s Mother possesses honorable traits. While the Queen is royalty and would be courteous in the means of being a gentle lady, Grendel’s mother values family and loyalty as much and if not more than royalty would. In fact, Grendel’s mother respects these values to a point where she goes and avenges her son’s death which a Queen would more than likely not do herself. While both would have similar values, a characteristic which would set the two apart would be that Grendel’s mother is a doer. The Queen would more than likely have sent someone else to do the “dirty” work, and the Queen’s hands would not have physically have blood on them, only metaphorically. Perhaps one explanation which would clarify why one character would do and the other not would be the time period and culture they lived in. In Guinevere’s time and culture, there was a code of chilvary to live by, and the men would happily carry out a woman’s wish in order to be a gentleman. In the time of Grendel’s mother, a woman was still not supposed to assume the duties of a man; however, there wasn’t a specific code which was lived by.
