From the article “Top 5 Motocross Injuries” on PhysioRoom.com, studies have shown that 95% of motocross racers have been injured while participating in the sport, and most athletes have begun to believe that injuries are nearly impossible to avoid in the sport. Many people believe motocross isn’t a sport. If most athletes participating in a sport believe injuries are inevitable, then what is a real sport considered? The majority of people who don’t believe motocross is a sport are people who don’t know anything about the sport and don’t bother to take the time to learn about it. It’s not fair to motocross athletes because they don’t get the recognition and credit they deserve for draining themselves for a sport some people see as just a hobby.…show more content…
Motocross is not in the Olympic so it is not a sport. The Olympics recognizes sports like curling, table tennis, archery, and even speed walking. Most of these don’t even require that much physical activity. If motocross has any physical activity it would be considered an olympic sport. BMX is considered a sport because you have to work to move the pedals, which makes the bike move. In motocross, the rider sits on his or her bike and the bike does all of the work. The rider twists their wrist to make the bike go and the rest is all up to the dirt bike. From experience, the average injury rate at local New England races is at least 7-10 and sometimes it’s even as high as 15. During a football game the worst a player gets is maybe a broken bone or a concussion. Thats a normal occurrence in motocross. In the article “Dirtbike Injuries in Children” by Abdelgawd, he states “Orthopedic surgeons have the obligation to warn the community against the possible dangers facing children who ride dirt bikes”. A study was conducted with 23 patients, all suffering injuries from motocross. 14 out of the 23 patients had brain injuries, 6 had abdominal injuries, and one patient even died shortly after entering the hospital (Abdelgawd). This shows how serious motocross is. Its not a sport just for fun. People see it as too dangerous but the dangers are all looked past. To riders it is more than a sport, it is a lifestyle that you are willing to risk your life for. If football was as dangerous, there would be some players, but there would be others that would give it up because of the danger. Motocross athletes dedicate themselves to a sport that could take their lives away at any time but some how it’s all still worth it in the
