Mentor Reflection

During my SCE, we were required to give a presentation to our mentor and our mentor's boss to convince them to let us go through with our idea of creating an online tournament. Of course, they had little to no background knowledge on the topic, and they ended up getting confused about what we were trying to portray to them. We eventually got them to understand and agree with our idea, but it took over an hour to complete what should've taken only a couple of minutes. This experience really helped me to understand that sometimes people had a different view of things than you do. To be able to understand what our mentor was thinking, I needed to see it from his point of view. Out of all of us, I was the first to realize where their misunderstanding was stemming from. If I hadn't employed empathy, we could've easily been there for over two hours and still got nothing done. In the future of our SCE, I'll definitely need to employ it again to make sure that, every time our mentor is involved, he fully understands what we are doing so we can save time by not having to explain and go in circle for hours. I'm sure that in the future, even after my SCE, I'll be put in a situation where I'm more familiar on a topic than the person I'm trying to explain my idea to. I think that the insights I gained from this experience will definitely come in handy. If anyone ever seems confused, I'll be able to reflect on this and know how to explain it by seeing it through their point of view. It's a situation I'm sure I'll be in again, and I'm glad I learned it early. It's happened to me tons of times in the past, and I'm sure that it'll continue to happen for the rest of my life. In college and later in life, I'll be able to quickly put people on common ground with me knowledge-wise, instead of just assuming that they should understand even the simplest things about what I'm trying to portray to
