Autism defined by the New Oxford American Dictionary is, “a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts.” Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder and in addition is considered a “spectrum disorder”. A spectrum disorder is a disorder that can have many different symptoms and does not manifest in the same way in every single person affected. My brother Trey is sixteen years old, goes to Atascocita High School, and is autistic. Autism is something it is very complex and affects everyone and their families differently. While it might not be something someone would wish their child or family member to be, I would not want him to be any different.…show more content…
When I was younger, I did not completely understand what that meant. I knew that autism meant that my brother was not considered “normal” and that he did not function the same way as I did. I did not realize how drastically this would affect my life but more importantly, I did not realize how much this would affect his life. Since I was not fully capable at such a young age to understand what autism was, there were times that I did not treat my brother the way I should have. I did not fully understand why he would throw tantrums non-stop for days or why he would bang his head on the ground. It took me a while to understand what caused him to have behaviors like this and how I should handle him and act around him. Autism was not something that was easy for me to fully comprehend, but because I grew up with an autistic brother, it has made me a more accepting
