Describe the values that are important for a nurse practitioner ? From the moment I walked into the defunct University Park Hospital in Chicago nearly 23 years ago for my clinical rotation in psychiatry while pursuing my associate degree in nursing, I knew immediately that I wanted to devout my nursing career to caring for those persons afflicted with mental illness. I observed how the nurses used therapeutic communication, showed compassion with empathy in dealing with this population. I told myself then, this is my calling. This is what I want to do. I began my nursing career working the medical surgical unit because some of the patients I observed had both medical and psychiatric diagnoses. I wanted to understand both the physical aspect and psychological disorder in order to better serve my patients. If I am privileged to be accepted and to obtain my post masters in mental health, I intend to continue my work in psychiatry and addiction medicine. The only difference now is that I will have more autonomy in my practice. I will be able diagnose, treat, counsel, consult and prescribe medications using evidence- based practice. As a trained and certified Family Nurse Practitioner by both the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the physical needs of my patients will be addressed as well as their psychological needs in my practice. In my nursing career, I have had the privileged of precepting new employees and nursing students doing their rotation in psychiatry. I intend to continue to be a preceptor and a resource person for new graduates, students, and consult for fellow nurse
