The Fall of the Roman Empire The fall of the Roman empire can be attributed to constant wars and heavy military spending, Constantine and the spread of Christianity, and political corruption. These things would be the undoing of the Roman empire. First, Rome was constantly having trouble finding the protection of its empire. “One of the main causes for the fall of the Roman empire was the constant wars and military spending” (Alchin 1). As you can plainly see, the constant wars drained Rome their soldiers, it would become their undoing. Their heavy military spending would become their hamartia in maintaining an empire. “Maintaining an army to defend the border of the empire from barbarian attacks was a constant drain on the government” (Rome.info 1). “One of the many factors that contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire was the rise of a new religion, Christianity. The Christian religion, which was monotheistic ran counter to the traditional Roman religion, which was polytheistic (many gods)” (Ushistory.org 1) As a result of the religious change the Roman government was greatly impacted, due to their belief that their leader was chosen by a diety. The leaders lost much of his power and political influence do to this religious change. “Eventually the Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great, proclaimed himself a Christian and issued an edict promising the Christians his favor and protection. Attitudes in the Roman Empire changed from being antagonistic to becoming pacifistic” (Alchin 1). For example, the Roman soldiers, who we can now presume have converted to Christianity, are more likely to turn from a battle or not even enter it at all. This new pacifistic attitude brought the drug down the Roman’s ability to defend themselves and protect their empire.
