Emotional intelligence is different than intellectual intelligence in that intelectual measures your book smarts and emotional measures your ability to interact with others socially in a positive way. For a lot of people emotional intelligence is greater than a person's intelligence in achieving goals or success. Therefore, all people should be able to understand the five emotional skills. The five emotional skills are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. I believe the emotional skill that I identify with the most would be empathy. Emotional intelligence is a person’s ability to perceive, understand, and manage their emotions and feelings. Social skills are a very strong and important emotional skill. Social skills are the skills that are necessary to communicate and interact with others. In today's world everyone has access to the internet and at least one type of social media. Now that we can talk to people around the world using the internet, emotional intelligence is needed more so than before. When a conversation is not face to face, a person cannot read body language, tone of voice, or facial expressions to determine sarcasm or seriousness. Therefore, “people skills” are very important when conversing over the internet or texting. Another emotional skill is empathy. Empathy is the ability to recognize and understand the way people feel. This will help an individual in the workforce when dealing with clients and customers. Self-awareness and self-regulation are two categories of emotional intelligence that are closely related. Both involve being aware of your emotions as well as the effects they could have on others and the ability to control your emotions. There are many reasons why I believe that empathy is my best emotional skill. One reason is my ability to welcome new friends and help them through emotional times in their life. A couple of years ago, I met a person who had recently lost his mother. He was very close to her and loved and cared for her greatly. When we meet, he opened up to me and told me many stories that showed how close he and his mother were. We would go out catfishing at night to help clear his mind and get thru his emotional grief. I also have the ability to realize when my parents need help and what I can do to help. Such as, taking out the garbage, helping my younger siblings with homework, or simply knowing when it is not a good time to ask for something. I believe empathy is a very good skill to
