The versions in respect to leadership varies and it is often thought that leadership is influencing the followers towards a common shared purpose (Daft,2015, p5). Through class, I have a deep understanding of concepts, models and theory about leadership. The statement of this paper is to explore personal leadership vision and identify two key learnings from class which arise from research perspective on leadership and the personal side of leadership. Personal experience related to leadership is also discussed in this paper before giving a conclusion. The test in class reveals that I am at a low level in emotional intelligence as self-management is my weakness. For example, I could not control my emotions and yelling to others whom offends me on purpose when play basketball. Neither can I control my anger when someone else deliberately says something to provoke me, such as in the above-mentioned team experience when someone illustrates negative emotions and low degree of corporation. Based on the theory of emotional intelligence, one should have the ability to recognize and understand one’s emotions and how they affect life and work (Daft, 2015, p150) as a good leader should have a clearer picture about what can be used during leadership process with regards to his strengths and weakness (PANAIT, 2017, p134). Meanwhile, research demonstrates that people with self-regulation gains higher ability to handle stress and challenges (Daft, 2015, p150) and effective leaders seldom express aggressive or prejudices towards others (PANAIT, 2017, p135). Just like a proverb says to “know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles”. The second step can be summed up as find a mentor to guide and motivate in building emotional intelligence and gain valuable insights about skills, methods and experience (Parent, 2015.para10). The most important and the longest step is self-improvement which requires repetitive exercises, assessment, corrections and feedback. Mrs. Obama once delivered a speech at the Stanford Center at Peking University and pointed out that “as the Chinese saying goes, it’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books” (James,2014, para4). What Mrs. Obama didn’t mention is the next sentence of this saying which is “it is better to read countless person than to walk thousands of miles”.
