Pollution is a major adversary for the entire world and affects our day to day lives. Even though we hear about pollution all of the time, it seems as if people do not take it as a serious enough matter. Pollution all over the world is progressively getting worse due to the increasing growth in the population. Three of the biggest forms of pollution are land, air, and water pollution. Land pollution proposes a huge threat due to its many threats on our environment. One of the biggest causes of land pollution is the neglect people show to recycling. The effects of not recycling are detrimental to our environment and our health. If not one individual person on the planet recycled, we would be in danger of losing our everyday resources and people…show more content…
Incineration can be done in backyard burning or in an incinerator facility. Incinerator facilities burn at extremely hot temperatures so that they destroy most of the waste chemicals. Most of the remaining of the toxins are captured in the smokestacks and what is left over from that is discharged high in to the atmosphere to be diluted before it is breathed. Backyard burning does not burn even close to as hot as the incinerator facilities. Since it does not burn as hot, the emissions are not treated and they stay very low in our atmosphere where it is not diluted. Backyard burning causes many health problems ranging from bronchitis all the way to cancer. Backyard burnings have massive effects on the environment as well. They release nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, particle pollution, volatile organic compounds, and many others. These burnings are also one of the main causes of forest fires. They usually cause forest fires by the burning being carelessly taken care of or not being fully extinguished. Both incineration and landfills have enormous environmental effects on land, water, and…show more content…
One major example is dumping trash and toxic compounds into lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Trash and toxic waste dumping kills many marine life as well as wildlife and eventually humans. It completely disrupts the food chain. Fish can get caught in the trash and die because of it. Fish can eat the organic compounds and then a human or animal can eat the fish and become very ill. Humans can even contract hepatitis from eating seafood that has been poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always an outbreak of cholera and diseases as a result of contaminated drinking water. One of the most pervasive water pollution issues the world is facing today is the level of mercury in the oceans. Inorganic mercury is a byproduct of industrial process. The level of mercury in fish is extremely dangerous to young children and women who are pregnant or are nursing. Scientists have found mercury to interfere with the development of the central nervous system in fetuses and young children, which could possibly lead to an extensive amount of long term
