Dystopian films describe an imaginary society that is usually as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as physically and imaginably possible. The terrific trilogies give its characters many uplifting moments, however there are a greater number of unpretentious outcomes. Both the Hunger Games and Divergent are based off of a dystopian, futuristic, life, however having different societies comes with having many similar and different aspects of life. Both societies rise from the ruins of North America. Not only that, but both movies are told by female protagonists. Tris in Divergent and Katniss in the Hunger Games are two fearless and rebellious sixteen year old girls, who endure a tyrannical government along with other normal teenage difficulties. For instance, in Divergent people have the ability to choose their faction when they turn sixteen, therefore allowing them to dictate their own future. However, they do not have the freedom of choosing what district they live in, in the Hunger Games. Another example of the differences throughout the movies is how different each other’s difficulties are. Tris mainly struggled to fit in, in her new faction. On the other hand, Katniss had more day to day life struggles, such as finding food for her family and learning how to survive in the arena. Also, Tris and Katniss play different roles in their country’s war. Tris is like a soldier, involved in the physical fighting itself, whereas Katniss is portrayed rather as an icon of hope for the rebels. Katniss and Tris both live in societies that have their own belief system, but each of them is in their own time period. The Hunger Games manages to stay realistic, whereas the only futuristic elements are force fields, and all of the advanced medical technologies.
