“The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” are two highly-recognized successful films of the 21st century. They are both adaptations of the first book of their novels “The Hunger Games Trilogy” by Suzanne Collins and “The Divergent Series” by Veronica Roth and are both of the same genre- science fiction. Both films are set in a dystopian future and feature a young female heroine who steps up and defies the system established in her society and fights in order to survive. Despite the similarities of the two films in genre, setting and leading character, they are mainly diverse in the journey and characteristics of the female heroines and the kind of societies they are currently part of. Both are strong-willed, selfless and brave female characters and they have demonstrated these through their decisions and experiences in life. Katniss is an independent strong survivor and has been the provider for her family since her father’s death and mother’s depression. She also takes care of her younger sister, Prim. Katniss is a highly-skilled archer, hunter and knowledgeable with plant life. She used these skills to keep her family from starving and to survive in the annual Hunger Games. It is a televised-annual event wherein boys and girls aged 12-18 from each district are forced to participate and are required to fight and kill to death until one “tribute” lives. Katniss showed her selflessness and love when she volunteered to take her sister’s place in the reaping of the Hunger Games. Because she spent most of her time struggling to keep her family alive, she is not a people-person and is often ignorant of people’s emotions. She has a black hair, olive skin and grey eyes and is reserved about her feelings. On the other hand, Tris has a blonde hair and large round blue eyes. She enjoys adventures and seeks thrill in life and stands up for other people. In the initiation process, it emphasized that she wants to fit in the ‘’dauntless” faction and does not want to show weakness.
