What’s so great about Gatsby? Baz Luhrman's 'The Great Gatsby' is an overwhelming and extravagant film, that gives viewers a slight taste of what the 1920's had been like, or better known as 'The Roaring 20's'. With a lot of excessive film techniques used throughout 'The Great Gatsby' we could almost say that it is a typical Baz Luhrman film. If the viewer had seen a film previously directed by Baz Luhrman such as 'Moulin Rogue' there are many techniques and ideas that can be linked, the extravagance of each film being one of them. 'The Great Gatsby' is an enticing tale of love, deceit, wealth, and corruption. Where the main character is but a mere pawn in a game of chess involving only the wealthy. The setting in particular had given the movie a surreal feel almost as though all the characters had been living in a fantasy world. With castle like mansions, money that seems to never end, and people that continue to suffocate each other with their presence. These aspects of the film enrapture the audience and make them feel as though they are a part of this fantasy world created by Jay Gatsby. The mansion, the money, the parties capture the audience’s attention and makes it hard for your eyes to leave the screen. Baz Luhrman's use of extreme film techniques such as music had done a great job at keeping the audiences focus with a mash-up of 21st century hip hop and 20th century classic music. Baz Luhrman's use of music had been a genius idea to capture the audiences of all ages, which it had done. The music had often proceeded to get louder and more dramatized as the scenes became more intense and extravagant such as the party scenes. They had all came across as a very wealthy, proper group of people that is aside from the main character Nick Carraway who came across as a more humble keep to himself kind of man, a man minding his own business and not looking for any trouble. Except trouble happens to find him. The beautiful Daisy Buchanan came across as an innocent and love torn female when first watching ‘The Great Gatsby’, however after watching the film for a second time I interpreted the character of Daisy Buchanan in a very different manner. After watching the film a second time she came across as somewhat of a femme fatale an alluring seductive figure that misleads men. You begin to see through façade of Daisy Buchanan and realise she isn’t all what you thought she was the first time round. This is also a very good portrayal of a love triangle that Baz Luhrman created brilliantly adding more spice to the entire movie. However although this is my thoughts on Daisy Buchanan she can also be interpreted as the innocent women that is genuinely torn between two, from the point of view of another person, such as a male. Carey Mulligan does such a brilliant job at playing the part that it is almost as though she can mesmerize men through the screen, therefore creating a different interpretation of her character from men and
