The Great Gatsby Many similarities and differences exist in the setting, characterization, and plot elements of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby and two of the film adaptations of the book. There are many similarities in The Great Great Gatsby’s setting. The movie and the book are both placed in New York City, and both homesteads are placed in West and East Egg. In the middle of West and East Egg is a place called the “Valley of the ashes.” Both the book and movie are very similar, but the book is more detailed. Several similarities and differences occur between the characters in the movie and in the book. One of the characters, Daisy, is shallow and the reader doesn’t feel sympathy towards her.
