Racism and racial tension is an epidemic that has existed in America for hundreds of years, dating back to the 1619 as a result of white people enslaving black people. Throughout the years there have been several groups and organizations that have fought against the different types of racism that were plaguing the black community of the time. The Black Panther Party for Self- Defense and Black Lives Matter are examples of organizations that have fought against racism in their respective decades-the 1960s and 1970s and the 21st century that has gained them popularity. The Black Panther Party for Self-defense was formed in 1966 in Oakland with its aims of “policing the police” (Source B) and being “the defense of community” (Source B) after their “state violence that had come to characterize life in black urban communities” (Source B). This state violence stemmed from the Civil Rights Movement which was going on in the deep southern states and northern ghettos of America. Black people were being beaten and killed at random by police. Similarly the Black Lives Matter was formed “as a call to action” (Source A) against police brutality and they were now protesting as “response to the anti-Black racism that permeates our society” (Source A) after the murder of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman. In essence the core reason for both of these organizations to form was to shed light onto the police brutality against black people in their communities and society and make it known that this was a racist act and would not be tolerated by black people. The difference between The Black Panther Party and Black Lives Matter is that the aim of the Black Panther was to stop the violence and brutality from happening by watching the police’s interaction with the black community and being ready to step in and defend their people when they thought that the police were mistreating a black person.
